Gynacantha subinterrupta

Scientific name: Gynacantha subinterrupta Rambur, 1842
Family: Aeschnidae
Thai name: แมลงปอยักษ์รีทีก้านยาว

male

Three years ago, when I walked into my small dark and dense banana garden, it feels like getting lost in the forest. There were lots of dry brown leaves holding around the tree. Suddenly, something I can't see clearly flew and perched vertically in front of me. It's a big dragonfly named Gynacantha subinterrupta.

There are 7 members of genus Gynacantha in Thailand, G. subinterrupta is the most common species.

male's appendages

Male is dark green, and changes to brown as it ages, with dark markings on abdomen. Fron marked with "T". S-2 is concaved -- very unique characteristic. The tip of appendages are pointed as see in the photo below. The coloration of the female is similar to the male. S-2 is broader and stouter than those in the male.

female

This dragonfly is common and widespread species. You can find it all the year.
