Rhyothemis triangularis

Scientific name: Rhyothemis triangularis Kirby, 1889
Family: Libellulidae
Thai name: แมงปอบ้านไร่สามเหลี่ยม

Rhyothemis is a beautiful dragonfly genus. There are 5 species recorded in Thailand and I see all of them ... except female of some species. Females are hard to spot in the field and one, R. variegata, is doubtful. Strange enough, there is no any record of female R. variegata in Thailand before! All specimens and what I've seen are male. Recently, I just see female R. triangularis for the first time after searching for many times.

R. triangularis is a small dragonfly living in vegetatives near the stream. Male is dark metallic body. Base of forewings hindwings are blue iridescents. Female is similar to the male. Base of fore-and hindwings are darker.

You can see this beautiful species almost all parts of Thailand especially in eastern part all the year.

  1. Congrats on capturing the female R. triangularis. I have seen the male on a few occasions but not the female. Hope to spot one in Singapore soon :D

  2. Thanks and hope you'll capturing one soon!

What makes us not often see the female... maybe the female live further from the water as in Brachydiplax farinosa. In this case, as far as I know, the males are always seen near the stream but the females are spotted at least 500 meter far from the water. Or...it's not the right time to see them.
