Prodasineura auricolor

Scientific name: Prodasineura auricolor (Fraser, 1927)
Family: Protoneuridae
Thai name: แมลงปอเข็มหางเข็มเหลือง

After I got a Dr. Asahina's paper on Thai prodasineurids last few years, I've been always wondering what is Prodasineura auricolor like. It said that P. auricolor is similar to P. croconota (from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Vietnam) and only one drawing of male's caudal appendages (compare with those of P. croconota) is included. Finally, I found it in Petchabun, a new provincial record!

male

Male is black with broad orange yellow antehumeral stripes. Ocular stripe is orange yellow.  A pair of yellow juxtaposed triangular spots are on prothorax. Abdomen is black with white basal ring. Dorsum of S-10 and superior appendages are blue. Female is black with narrow antehumeral stripes. Dorsum of S9-10 has blue  unique markings. Anal appendages are also blue.

female

You can see this species in June-July in mountains of Chiang Mai, Kanchanaburi and Petchabun.

  1. I saw the male of this species in October... at Nam Nao NP! There were 2 specimens at the small stream near the campsite.
Maybe they are around longer than first thought!
