Drepanosticta sharpi

Scientific name: Drepanosticta sharpi (Laidlaw, 1907)
Family: Platystictidae
Thai name: แมลงปอเข็มร่มไม้ชาร์พ

male

Of five drepanostictid found in Thailand, Drepanosticta sharpi is the lastest species I see. I've seen four species now. There's only one species left--D. khaochongensis.

male-dorsal view

Male is metallic black with white stripe on pterothorax. Prothorax has a dark marking as in the photo. Almost of S8 and entire S9 are blue. Superior appendages is like a horse head (from side view) as in those of D. frontalis and D. khaochongensis. Female is similar to the male but stouter. Lateral spot on S8-9 is evidently bigger.

female

D. sharpi is southern species ranging northward to Kanchanaburi. You can see this species in May-October.
