Coeliccia albicauda

Scientific name: Coeliccia albicauda (Förster in Laidlaw & Förster, 1907)
Family: Platycnemididae
Thai name: แมลงปอเข็มท้องยาวสีเผือก

Happy Songkran Day, The Thai New Year's Day!

male: adult and young

Coeliccia is the genus which is easily spotted around the waterfall. I once studied odonates in Kaeng Krachan national park, Petchaburi province and found an unknown Coeliccia for me at a waterfall. At first I thought it's C. didyma because there are two pairs of spots on front of synthorax. But when I carefully looked at the spots,  they're different from C. didyma I've seen before, that's my EUREKA moment!

female: young and adult

Male is black with blue stripes. There are two pairs of spots on front of synthorax. The lower pair is bigger than the upper one. The lower pair of spots are circular(, whereas those of C. didyma are oval). Anal appendages are ivory/white. Female has a unique blue antehumeral stripe on synthorax.

You can find this species in Western and Southern Thailand all the year.
