Lathrecista asiatica

Scientific name: Lathrecista asiatica (Fabricius, 1798)
Family: Libellulidae
Thai name: แมลงปอบ้านเอเชีย

old male

Although Lathrecista asiatica is said to be widespread lowland species in Thailand, I found only few times (maybe most places I go are waterfalls) especially around my home. There are only few individuals I see each time. First time I see this dragonfly (especially young male), It confused me with Potamarcha congener. However, its abdomen is more slender than those of P. congener. Coloration of abdomen in young male of these two species are also different.

young male

Young male is like the female: it's yellow with dark/brown stripes in synthorax and dull orange abdomen except S9-10 which is black. Matured male is black synthorax and its abdomen becomes red in color. Abdomen of female is bright orange and its synthorax is yellow with dark stripes. Wing tips are darken.

female

This species is found all the year in lowland area.
