Rhinocypha arguta

Scientific name: Rhinocypha arguta Hämäläinen & Divasiri, 1997
Family: Chlorocyphidae
Thai name: แมลงปอเข็มน้ำตกท้องส้ม, แมลงปอเข็มน้ำตกสั้นขีดคู่

"Are you crazy?" my friends asked me when I told them I would go to Phu Kradueng national park last year. I promised myself that I'll go to this place until I found Rhinocypha arguta in the type locality.  This is my third visit to the place. Most people don't like to climb up on narrow and steep 5-kilometere trail to the plateau. Steep 5-kilometer trail!? It's a little thing for me when comparing with my desire. But there's another thing that make the people don't give up and go up there. When you're on there, it's like a heaven on earth. Eeverything's beautiful and lots of dragonflies!

Because I failed to see it twice, I went up with a hope for seeing dragonflies, not particular to R. arguta. Finally, I saw it! They are everywhere along the stream! Tens of orange dots were flying quickly in front of me. I was impressed with this scene. This yields a successful trip; at least 38 species are found.

female

In Thailand, R. arguta is the only chlorocyphid species whose abdomen is orange.  It's previously an endemic species but, recently (in August 2010), it also found in Vietnam. Female is black with yellow markings. Blue eyes and white stigma help you to differentiate it from the female of other species.

You can find this species in two places, Loei and Chiang Mai, in October-November.

P.S. Although I found it already, I'll still go up there twice a year. ;-D

P.S.2  Thanks Phan Quoc Toan for discovering R. arguta in Vietnam!
