Scientific name: Aethriamanta aethra Ris, 1912
Family: Libellulidae
Thai name: แมลงปอบ้านยอดฟ้า
The small libellulid often found in my backyard is Aethriamanta aethra. At the first time I see it, call me 'newbie', I were surprised bacause it's just a juvenile and this is not included in all guide books I have. [the coloration is very different from the mature one.] After I see the old one around, I know this will be embeded in my long-term memory. Guide books help you to know the names of some species but not all stages they develops. It's hard (sometimes impossible) to guess or know what dragonfly in front of you is (esp. in young or old one) if you don't have any experience.
male

S8-10 is entirely black. The pterothorax and S1-7 is blue pruinosed as it ages. Female is similar to the young male. Abdomen is stouter. Female is also pruinosed.
