Urothemis signata

Scientific name: Urothemis signata (Rambur, 1842)
Family: Libellulidae
Thai name: แมลงปอบ้านกลางปลายหางแต้ม, แมลงปอบ้านกลางหางแต้ม

I often found three red libellulids around lowland ponds and canals: Crocothemis servilia, Rhodothemis rufa and Urothemis signata. The latter loves to perch on dry twig near the pond and canal. Many people are confused with these three species. U. signata is recognised by two black spots on two apical segments.

Male is red body with two black spots on S9-10. Caudal appendages are red. Female is yellow with black spots on abdominal segments as shown in the photo.

You can find this species throughout the country all the year.
